Best Cabernet Sauvignons for 2020

1/ Jim Barry The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

This such a well made, integrated and balanced wine for the money. It has classic Coonawarra cassis, menthol, pepper and pencil-lead minerality – all so well integrated. It is medium-full bodied, dense and balanced with firm slightly gritty tannin.
Notes of spearmint and candied plum are offered on the nose. The palate is dry and offers a tacky tannic texture. The pepper and perfume is distinctly Coonawara and as a whole, thsis offers plenty of intrigue and appeal.

.2/ Firestone Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

For less than $20 there is a lot going on here with this elegant cabernet. It is a clean cool climate cabernet sauvignon from the Santa Ynez Valley about 90 minutes drive north of Santa Barbara. This is a surprisingly complex and refined cabernet, and great value based on its balance and depth. It’s a bit different in that it features some fine herbality, vaguely leafy character, but the fruit is still ripe with sweet raspberry and blackcurrant jam, and the oak is well handled. It is medium-full bodied, even-handed, with fine drying tannin, some warmth and earthiness. A bit Bordeaux-like flavour wise with California textures.

3/ Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

This is a very composed and complete Maipo cabernet that offers great value. It is very complex with dark blackcurrant/plum fruit aromas nicely interspersed amid juniper-like greenness, roasted coffee bean, a touch of leather and some stoniness. It is full bodied, firm yet elegant with fine tannin and moderated alcohol. The fruit carries nicely onto the finish with herbal and graphite notes going to excellent length.

4/ Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

This is a well structured, firm if coarse and slightly volatile cabernet. But with that tannic structure and complexity it certainly is Cape cabernet. Expect lifted blackcurrant, herbal/fynbos, iodine and spicy aromas. Very good intensity and authenticity.
This is a typical Cape cabernet with a nice mineral tone to the aromas and flavours. The nose shows cassis fruit with herbal, smoke and oak spice notes. The palate is graced with a fine tannin structure plus lively acidity to make it seem less fullbodied.

5/ District 7 Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Rich and abundantly flavourful, a real crowd pleaser but well-made with authentic character and mouth-filling generosity. Excellent concentration for the price. Loaded with black fruit and firm tannins yet avoids the trappings of overripens or sweetness.
This is a surprisingly complex and complete cabernet from California’s Central Coast, delivering far more than the mean at this price level from the Golden State. For one, it’s dry, not pandering to the masses with heaps of residual sugar, and tannins are genuinely ripe and well managed.
